KeNHA Issues Nationwide Road Safety Alert as Heavy Rains Raise Flood and Accident Risks

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a nationwide road safety alert urging motorists and other road users to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains continue to pound many parts of the country.

In a public notice dated March 4, the authority warned that persistent rainfall forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department could worsen driving conditions, increasing the risk of flooding, poor visibility, and road accidents.

The alert follows similar warnings from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), which cautioned motorists about hazardous road conditions caused by heavy rains, fog, and slippery surfaces.

“The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast persistent rainfall across many parts of the country this season, with moderate to heavy downpours expected in both urban and rural areas,” KeNHA said in the advisory.

The authority noted that increased flood risks and reduced visibility are already affecting road travel in several areas.

KeNHA urged drivers to slow down, maintain safe following distances, and avoid overtaking during heavy rainfall or fog, warning that such conditions significantly increase the likelihood of collisions.

Motorists were also advised not to attempt driving through flooded sections of roads, as water levels can rise quickly and conceal damaged road surfaces or deep potholes.

“Slow down and maintain a safe following distance. Avoid overtaking during heavy rain or fog. Do not attempt to drive through flooded sections,” the authority said.

The notice also targeted vulnerable road users, including motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians, who face heightened risks during heavy rainfall.

KeNHA advised motorcyclists and cyclists to wear reflective gear to improve visibility, while pedestrians were urged to avoid walking close to fast-moving traffic during storms.

Road authorities warned that heavy downpours could trigger traffic disruptions across the country, including delays, temporary road closures, and an increased risk of accidents, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Kenya has experienced a rise in road safety concerns in recent months, with authorities repeatedly urging motorists to observe traffic rules as weather conditions worsen.

According to road safety experts, rainfall significantly increases accident risks because water reduces tyre grip on the road surface and lowers visibility for drivers.

Flooded roads can also damage infrastructure, weaken bridges, and wash away sections of highways, making travel more dangerous for both motorists and pedestrians.

KeNHA said it will continue monitoring the situation and respond promptly to affected road sections to ensure safety and maintain traffic flow.

“The Authority will continue to monitor the situation and respond promptly to affected road sections. Your safety remains our priority,” the notice stated.

Authorities are urging Kenyans to remain vigilant during the rainy season and to follow safety guidelines to prevent avoidable accidents as the country experiences widespread rainfall.
