Kenya Loses 12-21 to Fiji in Heartbreaking Singapore 7s Final

Date:

Nairobi, Kenya- Kenya’s Shujaas suffered a tough defeat in the final of the 2025 Singapore 7s, losing 12-21 to Fiji in a high-octane match at the Singapore National Stadium.

Despite a strong start and spirited efforts throughout the game, the Shujaas could not hold on to their lead, allowing the Fijians to claim victory in what was a rematch of the dramatic 2016 final.

Kenya’s road to the final was paved with determination, as they triumphed over Spain 12-5 in a nail-biting semifinal.

The Shujaas dominated early, with Patrick Odongo scoring the opening try just two minutes into the match. Nygel Amaitsa’s successful conversion gave Kenya a 7-0 lead.

Spain, playing with grit, saw their hopes dashed after a red card to Francisco Cosculluela. This opened the door for Odongo to score again, but Spain managed a late try, capitalizing on a rare Kenyan error.

However, Kenya held firm, with the match ending 12-5, sending them to the highly anticipated final against Fiji.

A Strong Start, But Fiji’s Second-Half Comeback

The final began with a sense of hope for Kenya. Taking advantage of a penalty, they scored the first try of the game and went into halftime leading 7-0.

The Kenyan fans in the stands were ecstatic, sensing a repeat of their historic 2016 victory.

However, the momentum shifted after the break. Fiji’s Vuiviawa Naduvalo quickly leveled the score with a try, and from there, Fiji seized control of the game.

Their experience showed, as they capitalized on another penalty and scrum to take the lead 14-7. A second try by Naduvalo extended their advantage further.

The match was nearly sealed when Alusio Vakadranu added another try, giving Fiji a 21-7 lead. Despite a valiant effort from Kenya, including a try by William Mwanji, they could not close the gap, and Fiji held on to win 21-12, denying Kenya a fairytale finish.

Shujaas’ Tournament Journey

Kenya’s performance in the tournament was one of resilience and skill.

The Shujaas began their campaign with a 17-7 victory over Ireland on April 5 and followed up with a narrow 10-7 win over France, topping Group B.

The victory over Spain in the semifinal, however, stood out as the team’s most memorable moment.

Shujaas coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua praised his team’s disciplined and resolute performances throughout the tournament.

Despite the heartbreaking final loss, the Shujaas proved they are a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.

Kenya’s journey to the 2025 Singapore 7s final may have ended in heartbreak, but it showed the world that the Shujaas are not to be underestimated.

With a mix of youthful talent and seasoned experience, they have set the stage for even greater things in the future.
