NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya Railways has announced the cessation of the extra Kisumu train trips introduced for the festive season, reverting to its standard weekly schedule.
The move comes after about a month of increased services aimed at easing holiday traffic congestion on Kenyan roads.
In a statement, Kenya Railways confirmed that the Kisumu Safari Train will now operate on its regular schedule, with departures from Nairobi Central Station to Kisumu every Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The return trips from Kisumu to Nairobi will leave every Sunday at 6 p.m.
“We wish to inform our esteemed customers that the Kisumu Safari Train has reverted to the normal weekly schedule,” the statement read. “The train will depart from Nairobi Central Station for Kisumu every Friday at 5:30 pm and make its return trip from Kisumu to Nairobi every Sunday at 6 pm.”

During the festive period, from December 19, 2024, Kenya Railways had added trips to accommodate the increased number of travelers.
Trains departed Nairobi for Kisumu on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 4 p.m., while the return trips from Kisumu to Nairobi were scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 6:30 p.m.
The additional trips were part of efforts to alleviate the notorious traffic congestion experienced on Kenyan roads during the holiday season, particularly for those traveling to the Nyanza and Western Kenya regions.
Kenya Railways’ initiative provided a crucial alternative for travellers looking to avoid heavy road traffic, a common issue during the festive period due to overlapping and gridlock, especially on routes leading to Nyanza and Western Kenya.
