NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya Railways has announced the immediate suspension of commuter train services on four key Nairobi routes, citing safety concerns.
In a notice signed by Managing Director Philip Mainga, the corporation said the affected routes are Nairobi-Ruiru, Nairobi-Embakasi Village, Nairobi-Lukenya, and Nairobi-Syokimau.
“We are compelled to take these precautionary measures because the safety of our customers is of paramount importance to us,” the statement read.
No timeline has been provided for when the services will resume, with Kenya Railways only stating that passengers will be updated “once normal services resume.”
The move is likely to disrupt daily commutes for thousands of Nairobi residents who rely on the rail service to navigate the capital’s congested roads.
Kenya Railways offered an apology to passengers for the disruption, acknowledging the inconvenience caused.
The temporary halt comes just a week after the state corporation announced the upcoming launch of the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, aimed at easing last-mile connectivity for passengers arriving at Miritini SGR terminus from Nairobi.
“Imagine, no more long, costly transfers from Mombasa Terminus and easier movement for families, tourists, traders and students,” Kenya Railways said last Wednesday.
For years, travellers disembarking at Miritini—located 11 kilometres from Mombasa’s CBD—have had to rely on matatus, taxis, or boda bodas to complete their journey.
The new service is expected to revolutionise access to Mombasa city once operational.
