Kenya’s Medical Council Warns Against Fake Doctors Exploiting Online Platforms

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has raised the alarm over a surge in unqualified individuals posing as medical professionals on online platforms, misleading the public and endangering lives.

KMPDC CEO Dr. David G. Kariuki described the trend as a “serious violation of the law” that has led to cases of misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and worsening health conditions for unsuspecting Kenyans.

“These so-called ‘doctors’ are not only misleading the public but also putting lives at risk by offering unqualified medical advice,” Dr. Kariuki said in a statement.

According to the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (CAP 253), it is illegal for anyone to use the title “doctor” without proper registration or licensing.

Those caught impersonating medical professionals face hefty penalties, including a KES 5 million fine, up to five years in prison, or both.

The law also criminalizes the unauthorized use of medical titles such as “Dr. (Medical/Dental)” and false claims of providing healthcare services.

With the rise in online medical fraud, KMPDC is urging Kenyans to verify healthcare providers before seeking treatment.

The council provides a free verification service through its website and via SMS.

To confirm a doctor’s credentials, send an SMS to 20547 using the format: P#Full Name of Practitioner or P#Registration Number.

To verify a health facility, send: H#Full Name of Facility or H#Registration Number.

KMPDC is also calling on media outlets and journalists to utilize these verification tools to prevent the spread of medical misinformation.

Dr. Kariuki reaffirmed the council’s commitment to upholding medical integrity and urged the public to report any suspicious individuals or online platforms claiming to offer medical services.

“Together, we can safeguard the integrity of the medical profession and ensure the safety of all Kenyans,” he emphasized.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over misinformation in the digital space, where fake medical advice spreads rapidly, often with severe consequences.
