KFS Responds to Viral Python Sighting in Karura Forest

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has moved to calm public concern after a video allegedly showing a giant python in Nairobi’s Karura Forest went viral this week.

The clip, widely shared online, appears to capture a massive snake slithering across a forest road before disappearing into thick undergrowth.

In a statement on Friday, KFS confirmed it was aware of the viral video but said the authenticity of the footage is still being verified.

“Although pythons have been sighted within Karura in the past years, namely in 2019 and 2022, the current sighting and the photo in circulation are yet to be authenticated,” the agency noted.

KFS urged forest visitors to remain vigilant and strictly use designated jogging and walking paths. Pet owners have also been advised to keep their animals on leashes at all times and avoid straying off approved tracks.

“In case of any sighting, the matter should be reported immediately to KFS Forest Rangers located at the various gates,” the statement added.

The service further reassured Nairobi residents that it is working with other government agencies to explore long-term solutions to potential risks posed by wildlife encounters in the forest.

Karura Forest, which spans more than 1,000 hectares, is one of Nairobi’s most treasured green spaces, attracting thousands of local and international visitors each month.

It is famed for its jogging and cycling trails, caves, waterfalls and rich biodiversity, and has become a symbol of urban conservation just minutes from the city centre.
