NAIROBI, Kenya- Uasin Gishu County turned into a global athletics hub as the 2nd edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country unfolded on December 7, 2024.
With runners from over 15 countries and a lineup of government heavyweights, the event is quickly solidifying its place on the World Athletics Gold-Level calendar.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki led the delegation of dignitaries, joined by Governors Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu), Wisely Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet), and Fernandes Barasa (Kakamega).
“This event showcases not just our athletic prowess but also our commitment to community development,” said DP Kindiki, who even took part in the 500-meter Patron’s Race to add some action to the festivities.
Chepsaita wasn’t just hosting a race; it was setting a standard. Recognized as a World Athletics Gold-Level event, the cross-country series saw over 10,000 athletes sprint across a meticulously designed course.
A technical team led by World Athletics’ Pauline Murumba ensured every detail met international standards.
“So far, everything has been seamless. This race is now part of the Gold-Level series, making it a vital event for global rankings,” said Murumba.
Competition director Kennedy Tanui added, “Chepsaita is among the most scenic and challenging courses globally. Athletes here will earn ranking points under the Gold-Level series, further cementing Kenya’s place in world athletics.”
Beyond the adrenaline and international prestige, the Great Chepsaita Cross Country has a deeper purpose. The event serves as a fundraising initiative supporting community projects, including education for 1,000 students and water infrastructure improvements.
“We’re not just running for glory; we’re running for change,” said race CEO Barnabas Korir. “The proceeds will directly benefit the community, ensuring this event leaves a lasting legacy.”
As the senior men’s and women’s races take center stage, the event’s success promises to echo beyond the tracks.
With plans to make the Great Chepsaita Cross Country an annual highlight on the World Athletics series, the event continues to attract top-tier talent and global attention.
