KRA Explains 8-Step Process for Filing Employment Income Tax Returns

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a simplified eight-step guide to help salaried employees file their annual income tax returns through the iTax platform.

In a public advisory released this week, the tax authority urged Kenyans earning income solely from employment to file their returns early and avoid last-minute congestion on the digital portal.

Under the guide, employees must first log in to the iTax system using their KRA PIN or national identification number together with their password.

After accessing the platform, taxpayers should navigate to the “Returns” section and select the option labelled “ITR for Employment Income Only.”

Once the return type is selected, the system automatically populates the return period on the e-return page. Taxpayers are then required to confirm that the period indicated is correct before clicking “Next” to proceed.

In the fourth step, employees must verify their gross employment income by navigating to Section F on the return form. KRA advised taxpayers to cross-check the figures with the P9 form issued annually by their employers.

The fifth step requires taxpayers to confirm the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax already deducted from their salaries. Employees must ensure that the amount recorded in the system matches the deductions reflected in their P9 statements.

Taxpayers are then required to review all deductions listed in Section T of the return form. These may include statutory deductions such as pension contributions, the Affordable Housing Levy, contributions to the Social Health Authority, and personal tax relief where applicable.

Once the information on income and deductions has been verified, users proceed to the seventh step, which involves reviewing the entire return form and submitting it through the system.

Employees must confirm the accuracy of the information provided before clicking the Submit button to finalise the filing process.

After submission, the system generates an acknowledgement receipt confirming successful filing. The receipt can be downloaded immediately from the portal or accessed later through the taxpayer’s registered email.

KRA said the simplified process is part of ongoing efforts to make tax compliance easier and more accessible for salaried workers across the country.

The guidance comes as the deadline for filing annual income tax returns approaches. The authority has been encouraging taxpayers to submit their returns on time to avoid penalties for late filing.

The tax agency has also recently introduced a phased filing approach aimed at streamlining the process and improving user experience for millions of taxpayers using the iTax system.
