Two Men Sentenced to Death for Violent Robbery in Meru

Date:

MERU, Kenya — The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has secured a death sentence against two men convicted of robbery with violence in Maua, Meru County.

The convicts, Douglas Muriithi and Antony Mugendi, were found guilty of attacking and robbing Janice Gacheri on the night of September 6, 2024, in Maua Location, Igembe South Sub-County.

According to court proceedings, the two men, armed with pangas, metal rods, and timber frames, accosted the victim at around 11:40 p.m. and stole cash and goods valued at Sh19,600.

The items included Sh5,700 in cash, 87 kilograms of sugar worth Sh13,050, and 17 kilograms of onions valued at Sh850.

The court heard that the victim sustained injuries during the нападение, a factor that aggravated the offence.

In delivering the judgment, the court held that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction and sentencing of the two offenders to death, as prescribed under Kenyan law for robbery with violence.

The case was prosecuted by Kelvin Gitonga.

The ruling underscores the judiciary’s continued enforcement of strict penalties for violent crimes, even as debate persists over the application of the death penalty in Kenya following evolving jurisprudence on sentencing and constitutional rights.
