MCK Pledges to Uphold Professionalism in Media While Ensuring Data Protection Compliance

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has reiterated its commitment to elevating professionalism within the media industry, all while ensuring strict adherence to data protection laws.

This comes at a time when balancing the public’s right to information and the protection of individual privacy is more critical than ever.

During a recent meeting organized by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), MCK CEO David Omwoyo emphasized the fine line the media must walk when it comes to providing access to information while respecting individual privacy.

He pointed out that, though access to information is essential, it must not come at the cost of breaching privacy rights.

“Privacy and the right to information may often seem contradictory, but they are both indispensable. We must ensure that we do not infringe on individuals’ right to privacy,” Omwoyo stated.

Data Protection Commissioner Ms. Immaculate Kassait echoed Omwoyo’s sentiments, describing data protection as a “moral imperative” that is vital to safeguarding individuals’ privacy.

With growing concerns about digital data breaches and identity theft, Kassait stressed the importance of responsible data use across all sectors, especially the media.

“Registration and compliance are fundamental to ensuring that data protection measures are upheld across all sectors, and partnerships among stakeholders are crucial in this regard,” Kassait said.

The media plays a crucial role in society, but with great power comes great responsibility—especially when it comes to handling personal data.

Omwoyo called on journalists and media organizations to take the lead in observing ethical guidelines, particularly when dealing with stories that involve sensitive personal information.

Both Omwoyo and Kassait pointed out that the media industry’s involvement is vital in protecting individuals from unauthorized data sharing and breaches.

The meeting also served as an important platform for educating media professionals about Kenya’s data protection laws and how to ethically navigate the intersection of privacy and information access.
