MERU, Kenya — The Meru County Liquor Board has issued a stern warning to bar owners and operators against selling alcohol to minors and dealing in illegal second-generation brews.
Speaking on Friday, the Board’s Chief Executive Officer, Gitonga Akubu, said enforcement teams have been dispatched across the county to ensure full compliance with licensing laws and the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act.
Akubu cautioned that any establishment found selling alcohol to persons under the age of 18 or stocking illicit liquor will face immediate closure and prosecution.
“We will not tolerate any business that endangers lives or violates the law. Those selling alcohol to minors or dealing in outlawed brews should be ready to face the full force of the law,” he warned.
He urged bar owners to promote responsible drinking and cooperate with authorities in curbing the sale of illegal and unsafe drinks.
The crackdown forms part of the county’s wider effort to combat rising cases of underage drinking and the circulation of unregulated alcoholic beverages that have posed public health risks in recent months.
