Nakuru Girls High School Closed Indefinitely After Student Unrest Destroys Exam Materials

Date:

NAKURU, Kenya – Nakuru Girls High School has been closed indefinitely following a night of student unrest that led to the destruction of property, including critical end-of-term examination papers.

In a statement issued to parents on Wednesday morning, Principal Rose Menjo said the chaos erupted at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, shortly after evening prep, when a group of students began causing a disturbance within the school compound.

According to the statement, the students broke into the school’s examination and evaluation room and destroyed all prepared end-of-term papers for every class. Several window panes across the institution were also smashed in the incident.

“The extent of the damages will be assessed by the State Department of Public Works today, July 23, 2025,” said Menjo, adding that despite the destruction, all students remained safe and accounted for.

The administration has since directed that the school be closed effective Wednesday morning.

“The school closes today, July 23, 2025, at 8 a.m. until further communication. Please make arrangements to facilitate your daughter’s travel,” the notice to parents read.

Authorities are expected to work closely with the school management to assess the full scope of the damage and establish the next steps, including any disciplinary measures or rescheduling of exams.

The motive behind the students’ actions remains unclear, but the school has assured parents that investigations are underway and further communication will be issued in due course.

This incident adds to a string of unrests in Kenyan secondary schools in recent years, many of which have been blamed on rising pressure during exam periods, strict school rules, and student dissatisfaction.
