Nursing Council of Kenya Appoints Lister Onsongo as New CEO

NAIROBI, Kenya—The Nursing Council of Kenya has announced Dr. Lister Onsongo’s appointment as the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective September 1, 2024.

The announcement was made by the Council’s Chairperson, Eunice Ndirangu, in a statement released on Wednesday.

Dr. Onsongo, who brings a wealth of experience in healthcare leadership, is set to lead the Council in its mission to regulate nursing and midwifery education and practice in Kenya.

She is known for her strong commitment to advancing the nursing and midwifery profession and her expertise in the field.

“On behalf of the Council, I am pleased to announce that following a competitive recruitment process, Dr. Lister Onsongo, PhD, has been appointed as the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing Council of Kenya,” said Ndirangu. “Her expertise and vision will undoubtedly lead the organisation to new heights as we continue to uphold our mission of regulating nursing and midwifery education and practice to protect the public and improve healthcare quality in Kenya.”

Dr. Onsongo succeeds Edna Tallam, whose tenure as CEO ended in December 2023. Since then, Anne Mukuna has served as the Acting Registrar/CEO during the transition period.

As the new head of the Nursing Council, Dr. Onsongo is tasked with overseeing the coordination and regulation of nursing and midwifery-related activities in Kenya.

Her role includes providing leadership in research, innovation, digitisation, and the implementation of best practices in the field.
