EMBU, Kenya – A fierce political contest is shaping up in Embu County following the vacancy in the Mbeere North parliamentary seat, with former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi throwing his weight behind Newton Kariuki — popularly known as Newton Karish — as the Democratic Party (DP) candidate.
The seat was left vacant after Geoffrey Ruku was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Public Service by President William Ruto.
In a statement posted on his official X account Sunday evening, June 15, 2025, Muturi confirmed Kariuki’s endorsement during a rally held at Kanyuombora Grounds, following a church service at ACK St John’s Kanyuombora.
“Karish is no stranger to service; his leadership in Mumenji speaks for itself,” Muturi wrote. “He is a dedicated son of Mbeere, grounded in our values and committed to championing the aspirations of our people.”

The announcement was made in the presence of Lenny Kivuti, chairperson of the Devolution Empowerment Party, signaling a renewed political alliance between seasoned Embu leaders under the Democratic Party banner.
Muturi, also a former Public Service Cabinet Secretary, framed the by-election as an opportunity for unity and grassroots-focused leadership.
“The journey ahead is clear: we must unite, organise, and deliver leadership that truly reflects the will of the people,” he said, adding that the Democratic Party was ready to reclaim the seat.
Although the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is yet to set a date for the by-election, several hopefuls are expected to enter the race once the commission’s new leadership is sworn in.
The unveiling of Kariuki, a respected local figure with a track record in Mumenji Ward, marks the first major endorsement in what is expected to be a heated contest for control of the strategic constituency.
