President Ruto Leads Kenyans in Mourning Wafula Chebukati: “Rest in Peace”

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has led the country in mourning the death of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

In a statement shared on his official X account, the head of state said he received the news of Chebukati’s demise with profound sorrow.

President Ruto eulogised Chebukati as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.

“His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace,” said the head of state.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said that it was with deep sorrow that he extended his heartfelt condolences on the passing of his learnt friend, Wafula Chebukati.

How Speaker Wetang’ula mourned Wafula Chebukati

Speaker Wetang’ula described the ex-IEBC boss as an eminent jurist, a steadfast defender of the rule of law, and a dedicated public servant whose contributions to Kenya’s democratic journey will be remembered for generations.

“As an advocate of great repute, Mr. Chebukati embodied the dignity and integrity of the legal profession. During his tenure as Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, he carried out his responsibilities with remarkable courage, fidelity to the Constitution, and an unwavering commitment to justice. Even in the face of immense challenges, he remained resolute, guided by his oath of office and the principles of fairness and transparency,” said Speaker Wetang’ula.

According to the Speaker, the passing of Chebukati is a profound loss not only to his family but also to the legal fraternity, the electoral governance space, and the nation as a whole.

Speaker Wetang’ula observed that Chebukati’s legacy of integrity and service will continue to inspire future generations of legal minds and public servants dedicated to upholding the rule of law and advancing democracy.

“On my behalf, that of my family, and the National Assembly of Kenya, I offer my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues. In this time of grief, may the Almighty grant them comfort and strength,” added the Speaker.

Opposition member and an ally of Raila’s message

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, who is Raila Odinga’s close ally, also eulogised Chebukati, saying:

“Fare thee well, Chairman Wafula Chebukati! Though we had serious differences of opinion on fundamental matters, we remained courteous and professionally respectful within the circle of friends. Rest in peace, Omwami.”

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii said Kenya has lost a hero and patriot.

According to Governor Bii, Wafula Chebukati will be remembered for his commitment to democracy and electoral integrity.

“As IEBC chair, he steered the country through two general elections. On behalf of the people of Uasin, we express our condolences to the family,” said Governor Bii.

Remembering Wafula Chebukati’s tenure in office

Kenyan musical artist Henry Ohanga, commonly referred to by his stage name, Octopizzo, also eulogised Chebukati.

“Former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati. Despite facing criticism, he remained steadfast in his commitment to electoral reforms. His legacy will be remembered,” said the award-winning hip-hop artist.

Chebukati oversaw presidential elections twice in Kenya. Each of those results was contested in court.

For instance, in 2017, the Supreme Court under the then Chief Justice David Maraga invalidated presidential poll results, for the first time in the country’s history, citing a series of flaws in procedure and conduct.

Chebukati survived the chaos even as colleagues such as Roselyne Akombe resigned and fled the country or were found dead.

After surviving the 2022 elections, he completed his term, limiting public appearances.
