Zhou’s diplomatic mission saw significant advancements in Kenya-China relations, which have yielded transformative developments in infrastructure, education, and technology.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), President Ruto commended the outgoing ambassador’s contributions to enhancing cooperation between Kenya and China.
“Kenya and China have built a solid partnership over the years that has worked for the mutual benefit of the two nations,” Ruto said. “The Standard Gauge Railway, superhighways, bypasses, and the construction of technical colleges are a testament to our flourishing relationship.”
Zhou also received recognition from Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who described the Kenya-China partnership as a “win-win future” built on mutual benefit and people-centered collaboration.
“As we bid a warm farewell to H.E. Zhou Pingjian, we express our gratitude for his dedication and invaluable contributions,” Mudavadi said. “Together, we are laying the foundation for an even closer Kenya-China community with a shared vision for prosperity.”
During his tenure, Zhou served not only as ambassador but also as the permanent representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat.
Reflecting on the historical ties between the two nations, Zhou previously remarked that Kenya-China relations date back over 600 years, to the expeditions of Chinese navigator Zheng He.
China and Kenya formalized diplomatic relations in 1963, with their partnership elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2017. This distinction underscores Kenya’s significance as one of China’s key strategic partners in Africa.
Beyond the presidency, Zhou’s diplomatic efforts were recognized by other Kenyan leaders.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula emphasized his role in fostering collaboration in areas like economic growth, education, and security.
“I bid farewell to a long-time friend and a dedicated diplomat who has played a pivotal role in cementing the strong diplomatic relations between our two countries,” Wetang’ula said during a courtesy visit last month.
Zhou expressed gratitude for his time in Kenya, noting the robust momentum generated in bilateral relations and calling for continued cooperation.
