NAIROBI, Kenya — Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) Commissioner Johnstone Muthama and Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu are mourning the death of their son, Moses Muthama.
The loss was confirmed on Thursday by Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, who conveyed his condolences and expressed solidarity with Kavindu and her family.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Machakos Senator, Hon. Agnes Kavindu Muthama and her family during this difficult time,” Wambua said. “I’m deeply sorry to hear about the loss of your son, Moses Muthama. Please receive our sincerest condolences.”
According to a statement released by the family, Moses developed breathing complications and was rushed to hospital, where doctors attempted to save his life. He was later confirmed dead. The family did not disclose further medical details.
The death adds to a series of recent losses involving families of Kenyan legislators, highlighting the personal toll borne by public figures beyond their official duties.
The development comes months after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) announced the death of Hillary Masara, the son of Suna West Member of Parliament Peter Masara. In a statement issued on June 30, the party conveyed its condolences and offered prayers to the bereaved family.
“We commiserate with Hon. Peter Masara, MP for Suna West, for the loss of his beloved son Hillary,” ODM said, praying for strength and grace for the family.
Earlier, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi also lost her son, Elvis Murakana Namenya. President William Ruto led national leaders in condoling with the family, offering prayers and words of comfort.
“May God grant Beatrice Elachi and the family strength to bear with the loss of their dear son,” the President said in a social media post, citing Psalm 147:3.
Elachi later revealed that her son died following a road accident. Speaking during Elvis’ requiem mass on March 28, she said the fatal crash occurred after a tyre burst caused the vehicle to skid. Elvis later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
Condolence messages have continued to pour in for Senator Kavindu and PSC Commissioner Muthama, with leaders and members of the public expressing sympathy and calling for privacy for the family as they mourn.
