Relief for Travellers as Mombasa Commuter Rail Set to Connect SGR to City Centre

Date:

MOMBASA, Kenya – President William Ruto will on Wednesday, September 17, commission the new Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, a project designed to ease the 14-kilometre journey between the Mombasa SGR terminus in Miritini and the city’s central business district.

Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) said the service will provide faster and more convenient transport for thousands of passengers arriving in Mombasa via the Madaraka Express.

The Ksh4.2 billion project, completed in August, includes new passenger stations at Miritini and Mombasa town, upgrades to 16.6 kilometres of metre-gauge track, and a 2.3-kilometre bridge over the Makupa Causeway.

The line will stop at Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi, Mazeras and Mombasa CBD.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, who inspected the line earlier this month, said the service is expected to carry about 4,000 commuters daily.

“The government is committed to improving public transport infrastructure, and this rail service will significantly enhance commuter mobility within Mombasa,” Chirchir said.

KRC noted that the new link offers “Park and Ride” and “Drop and Ride” options, giving Madaraka Express passengers seamless access to the city.

The launch mirrors a similar commuter rail service in Nairobi, which connects the SGR terminus at Syokimau to Imara Daima, Makadara and the Nairobi CBD.
