KISUMU, Kenya — Two close allies of Ex-DP Rigathi Gachagua have paid a courtesy visit to Acting ODM Party Leader Senator Oburu Odinga, in what observers view as a symbolic gesture of political goodwill amid Kenya’s shifting alliances.
Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa and Nyandarua Senator John Methu met Oburu at his Kisumu residence early Wednesday, where they expressed solidarity with him as he assumes the mantle of leadership following the death of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Thang’wa said the visit was aimed at offering respect and encouragement to Oburu, who now bears the responsibility of guiding the opposition party through a delicate transition period.
“We went to pay our respects and offer comfort, especially as he takes on the great responsibility of stepping into the late Raila Odinga’s shoes,” Thang’wa wrote. “As young leaders, we had the privilege to learn from his deep wisdom, shared through his endless stories and real-life experiences.”
Political analysts say the visit marks a rare show of camaraderie between leaders from the Kenya Kwanza coalition and the ODM Party, long seen as political rivals.
The meeting comes amid ongoing calls for national dialogue and reconciliation following weeks of political realignments after Raila’s passing.
“This kind of outreach signals a maturing political culture where leaders can rise above partisanship to show empathy and respect,” said political commentator Dr. Charles Njoroge.
“It may also reflect Gachagua’s broader strategy of softening relations with Nyanza leaders as national politics recalibrate.”
Neither side disclosed the full details of their discussion, but both senators described the encounter as cordial and reflective. The meeting adds to a growing list of bipartisan gestures across Kenya’s political divide in recent weeks, highlighting a shifting tone of dialogue over confrontation.
