Samburu: Suspected Bandits Ambush Convoy, Shoot Dead Police Officer, Free 8 Remandees

SAMBURU, Kenya – One police officer has been shot dead after a group of bandits ambushed a convoy of police officers from Baragoi Police Station.

A police report seen by Y News showed that the officers were escorting remandees from Maralal GK Prison to Baragoi Police Station, for Mobile Court sessions.

The police officers and the remandees were on board a Police Landcruiser, GKB 907W before the Monday, February 10, 2025 incident.

“They were attacked by suspected Turkana bandits at CHARDA area, along the Maralal -Baragoi -South Horr road,” the police report reads in part

The Deputy OCS immediately mobilised officers from the station backed by GSU Marti.

“On arrival at the Scene, they found the driver No.254918 PC Humphrey Oroba dead with his body having multiple gunshot wounds. His firearm AK47 Riffle s/no. 59014079 with 30 rounds of Ammunitions were missing,” the report further reads.

The two escort officers namely NO.107741 PC Nicholas Yegon with his G3 Riffles/no. G3J52162 with 60 rounds of ammunitions and NO. 250710 PC Kitasho Oloimaatha with Ak47 riffle s/no. 5503585 with 60 rounds of ammunitions together with the 8 remandees were also unaccounted for.

The 8 remandees were identified as Kennedy Lekisaat offence defilement, Ewoi Lonyogorot offence defilement, Namulem Losam offence possession of firearm, and Lorunyei Akware Offence gang defilement.

Others were Lopasho Ekoriana offence gang defilement, Saul Lekisaat offence defilement, Lokwawi Adoro offence murder/robbery with violence and Golong Arii-assault/grevious harm.

“A contingent of KDF, GSU and GD officers from Baragoi Police Station under the Command of SCPC Samburu North joined the advance team for search and rescue operation,” the police report reads.

However, after combing the vast thicket, the two officers were found alive, with no physical injuries and with their respective firearms and ammunitions.

The body of the deceased officer has been moved to Baragoi Sub County Hospital Morgue pending Autopsy.

“Efforts to arrest the suspects and to rearrest the escapees are underway. SCCIO Samburu North dealing,” the report also reads.
