Senate Convenes Special Sitting Monday to Hear Impeachment Charges Against Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has summoned a special sitting of the Senate on Monday, June 30, 2025, to begin formal proceedings on the impeachment of Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo.

In a statement on Friday, Kingi said the decision follows receipt of an official letter from the Speaker of the County Assembly of Isiolo, dated June 26 and received by the Senate on June 27.

The letter formally notified the Senate of the County Assembly’s resolution to remove Governor Guyo from office.

“I have appointed Monday, June 30, 2025, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. The sitting shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 10.00 am,” Kingi announced.

The Isiolo County Assembly passed the motion to impeach Guyo on Thursday, with 16 out of 18 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) voting in favour. Two MCAs were absent, and none opposed the motion.

Governor Guyo did not appear before the County Assembly to defend himself despite being issued a formal invitation.

His absence was recorded, and the proceedings continued as per the Standing Orders.

What Happens Next

The Senate is now expected to either form a special committee to investigate the charges or proceed with a plenary hearing where all Senators will participate.

The impeachment process in the Senate will determine whether the allegations against Governor Guyo warrant his removal from office under Article 181 of the Constitution.

The exact charges leading to Guyo’s impeachment are yet to be disclosed publicly, but the swift action by the County Assembly has set the stage for what is likely to be a politically charged Senate session.

The Monday sitting will mark the beginning of a constitutional process that could result in the first gubernatorial impeachment in 2025.
