NAIROBI, kenya —Senator Cherargei mourns after a helicopter crash in Mosop Sub‑County, Nandi County, claimed the lives of six people on Saturday, 28 February 2026, including Hon. Johana Ngeno Kipyegon, the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr Constituency.
The tragedy unfolded in the Chepkiep area at approximately 4:45 PM, when the privately‑operated helicopter, registered 5Y‑DSB, attempted an emergency landing amid deteriorating weather before crashing and bursting into flames.
The fatal crash killed all six people on board, including the long‑serving legislator and five others whose identities are yet to be fully confirmed by authorities. Initial reports indicate the helicopter had been flying from Nairobi earlier in the day and was forced down by poor weather conditions when it met the tragedy near Chepkiep Forest.
Hon. Ngeno, 54, was serving his third consecutive term as MP for the Electoral Constituency of Emurua Dikirr in Narok County, a seat he first won in 2013 and retained in the 2017 and 2022 elections.
At the time of his death, he was Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning & Public Works as well as a member of the Liaison Committee, where he played a key role in oversight of major programmes including the evolving Affordable Housing initiative.
In an official statement, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that its Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) has launched a full probe to establish the circumstances that led to the crash. Formal identification of the victims and notification of next of kin will be conducted by the relevant authorities.
Political and community leaders expressed profound grief over the loss. President William Ruto described Ngeno as a “progressive and devoted servant of the people who worked tirelessly for the residents of Emurua Dikirr”. He extended condolences to the families, friends, and constituents affected by the tragedy.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua demanded a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the crash, warning against speculation and asserting that the cause must be made public. He praised Ngeno as a great friend and a significant voice within the Kipsigis community, whose sudden death is a blow to the region.
Also paying tribute, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula conveyed his sorrow to the parliamentary fraternity and the nation, calling Ngeno a fierce representative who consistently put his constituents first.
Wetang’ula appointed a parliamentary team to liaise with the family and coordinate burial arrangements, subject to the family’s wishes.
Hon. Ngeno was widely recognised for his fearless advocacy for land rights and community interests, particularly in his home region. He was also known for supporting local cultural initiatives, including backing musicians and artists within his constituency.
His political career was marked by bold engagement on issues affecting rural livelihoods and equitable development.
