NAIROBI, Kenya– A deadly early-morning crash at Miasenyi in Taita-Taveta county left seven people dead on Sunday, marking one of the region’s worst road tragedies this festive season. The victims, who perished on the spot, were travelling in a Kinatwa matatu that collided head-on with an oncoming truck along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway.
Witnesses Say Matatu Was Overtaking Before Impact
Eyewitnesses at the scene described a split-second miscalculation that turned catastrophic. According to them, the matatu was headed toward Mombasa and had been overtaking other vehicles just moments before slamming into the truck. The force of the collision left the matatu crumpled, with bystanders scrambling to help survivors before authorities arrived.
Victims Taken to Moi Referral Hospital–Voi
Police and rescue teams transported the bodies, including the matatu driver’s, to the Moi Referral Hospital–Voi mortuary. Several survivors were also rushed to the same facility for urgent treatment as medical teams worked to stabilise them. Authorities said identification and notification of next of kin would follow standard procedure, given the severity of the crash.
Police Launch Probe Amid Holiday Traffic Surge
Investigators have now opened an inquiry into the cause of the accident, focusing on witness accounts, vehicle condition, and highway traffic patterns. With Christmas travel building up, police and highway agencies are urging drivers to slow down, avoid risky overtaking, and stay alert during long-distance trips.
The Miasenyi crash, coming at a time when roads are busier and speeds tend to climb, underscores the urgent need for caution as Kenyans crisscross the country for the holidays.
