Nairobi, Kenya- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended a man suspected of stealing over Sh500,000 from a client after posing as a taxi driver.
The suspect, identified as Fred Atandi Morara, was arrested on Tuesday following a report filed by the victim.
The victim and a friend were attempting to hail an online taxi on the night of August 8, 2025, when Morara approached them.
He offered them a more attractive price for a ride to their Airbnb in Lavington. After dropping them off, the suspect allegedly disappeared with the victim’s phone.
He then proceeded to transfer a total of Sh500,000 from multiple mobile money accounts before deactivating them to prevent tracking.
During the arrest, police recovered several items from Morara, including a Mazda Demio with what are believed to be fake license plates KDQ 810B.
Another set of plates, KDN 993Q, was also found in the vehicle. Detectives also seized various mobile phones, SIM cards, and a sisal rope.
Morara is currently in the custody of the DCI Dagoretti as the investigation continues.
