NEW YORK, USA – Former President Donald Trump, once an outspoken critic of TikTok, has now embraced the platform, marking a significant shift in his social media strategy.
Roughly a day since joining TikTok, his account had attracted 3 million followers on the short video social media platform that he tried to ban as president on national security ground and its Chinese ownership.
Trump’s TikTok account features a mix of political commentary, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and personal messages.
Media analyst Sarah Thompson noted,
“Trump’s move to TikTok is a strategic effort to connect with younger voters and influencers. It shows an understanding of the evolving digital landscape and the importance of reaching audiences where they spend their time.”
Trump’s activity on TikTok could significantly influence political discourse, especially as the 2024 elections approach.
Earlier this year, Congress approved a foreign aid package that included a provision requiring TikTok’s sale within a year or a ban from U.S. app stores.
Despite this legislative push, Trump has since changed his position, arguing that banning TikTok would ultimately benefit Facebook, which he has labeled the “true Enemy of the People.”
A recent video where Trump humorously addressed his initial opposition to the app has already become one of his most popular posts.
“I know I said TikTok was bad, but even I can change my mind when it comes to winning over the best supporters in the world,” he joked.
Digital strategist Mark Stevens highlighted the significance of this move:
“Trump’s decision to join TikTok underscores the platform’s influence and the necessity for political figures to diversify their social media presence. It’s not just about broadcasting messages but about engaging in real-time conversations and tapping into cultural moments,” he said
