NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati has been removed from his position as Chairperson of the Public Service Superannuation Fund (PSSF) Board of Trustees, barely three weeks after assuming office.
The revocation was announced through a Gazette Notice dated June 27, 2025, and signed by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 10(1)(a) of the Public Service Superannuation Scheme Act, as read together with section 51(1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning revokes the appointment of — Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati,” the notice read.
The move takes effect immediately, although the Treasury did not provide reasons for the sudden decision.
Wangamati, who served as Bungoma’s second governor, was appointed to the role on June 8, 2024, by then Treasury CS Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u for a three-year term.
His ouster comes as a surprise given the short duration he held the role.
The PSSF is a key institution managing retirement savings for public servants and plays a central role in pension reforms and fund administration across government.
It remains unclear who will succeed Wangamati at the helm of the board or whether the revocation signals wider changes within the fund’s management structure.
