Murang’a’s Kang’ata Care Wins Africa’s Top Public Service Award

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Murang’a County’s flagship healthcare initiative, Kang’ata Care, has clinched the Gold Medal at the 2024 African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM) Innovative Management Awards.

This marks the first time a Kenyan program has achieved the top honor in the prestigious competition, elevating the country’s standing in public service innovation.

Launched by Governor Irungu Kang’ata, the program was recognized for its transformative approach to making healthcare both affordable and accessible, particularly for vulnerable populations in Murang’a.

Since its inception, Kang’ata Care has served over 160,000 people, offering a comprehensive package of services that includes free inpatient and outpatient care, dental and optical treatments, and even financial support for overseas medical procedures.

The initiative also provides unique benefits, including Ksh.100,000 in family support upon the death of a principal member, Ksh.25,000 for secondary school fees for dependents, and Ksh.10,000 for marriage or childbirth events.

“This recognition underscores our commitment to making healthcare not just a service but a transformative force for the people of Murang’a County,” said Governor Kang’ata, who praised his team for their dedication and innovation.

Public Service Principal Secretary Amos Gathecha hailed the achievement as a milestone for Kenya, noting that it sets a new benchmark for universal healthcare across the continent.

“This award provides not just recognition for Kenya but a model for other nations striving to make healthcare accessible for all,” he said.

Kenya has previously earned recognition at the AAPAM awards with initiatives like Huduma Center (second place, 2022) and eCitizen (fourth place, 2017).

However, Kang’ata Care’s victory as the first-ever Gold Medalist cements its position as a groundbreaking force in public service delivery.
