Kenya’s Most Searched Topics of 2024: SHA, Tax Reform and Global Events Dominate Google Trends

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Social Health Authority (SHA) captured Kenya’s attention in 2024, becoming the nation’s most searched term, according to Google’s Year in Search report.

This new healthcare initiative, which replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), sparked widespread discussion as Kenyans debated its impact on healthcare policy.

The SHA rollout was a centerpiece in national conversations, with Google noting its ties to “discussions on the future of healthcare in Kenya.”

Meanwhile, the Finance Bill 2024 claimed the second spot on the list, driven by widespread public dissent over proposed tax hikes.

Protests, particularly led by Gen Z activists, culminated in the bill’s withdrawal, amplifying interest in the controversial legislation.

Kenyans also kept a close eye on international affairs, with the U.S. Elections 2024 landing in third place. The fiercely contested race saw Donald Trump return as President-Elect, drawing significant local interest.

In the personalities category, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua topped searches following his impeachment.

Cabinet Secretaries Rebecca Miano and Soipan Tuya also trended due to their impactful roles in government, while international names like reggae star Vybz Kartel and televangelist Benny Hinn attracted global curiosity.

Sports fever gripped the nation, with AFCON, Euro 2024, and the Summer Olympics dominating queries.

Tragedy also shaped the year’s search trends, with Kenyans mourning the loss of content creator Brian Chira, who died in a hit-and-run accident. His passing became the most searched loss of 2024, alongside other notable figures like Charles Ouda and Rita Tinina.

This year’s Google trends highlight a nation deeply engaged with transformative policies, global developments, and personal stories that left an indelible mark.

From groundbreaking healthcare reforms to unforgettable tragedies, Kenyans turned to search engines to make sense of a pivotal year.
