NAIROBI, Kenya- KenGen is turning up the dial on sustainable energy in Western Kenya.
The state-owned energy company plans to expand the Gogo Hydropower Plant’s capacity from 2MW to 8.6MW, marking a significant leap toward energy reliability and regional development.
The €38.8 million project, scheduled to kick off in mid-2025, is expected to generate 32GWh annually, strengthening Kenya’s clean energy goals.
The announcement was made during the issuance of 45 title deeds to members of the Gogo community, a move celebrated as both a legal milestone and a step toward economic empowerment.
The Gogo Hydropower Plant upgrade is poised to stabilize the electricity grid in Western Kenya, a region often grappling with inconsistent power supply.
By quadrupling the plant’s capacity, KenGen aims to meet rising energy demands while delivering clean, renewable power to the region.
KenGen CEO Peter Njenga emphasized the multifaceted benefits of the project, noting its potential to enhance infrastructure, support sustainable livelihoods, and foster economic growth.
“The Gogo redevelopment project will stabilize the Western region’s grid, deliver clean energy, and support improved infrastructure and livelihoods,” Njenga stated during the ceremony.
The project isn’t just about megawatts and gigawatt hours—it’s also a story of community transformation.
During the ceremony, KenGen handed over 45 title deeds to members of the Gogo community, a gesture hailed as a landmark step in fostering long-term security and economic empowerment.
“This is more than a legal transaction. It is a significant step toward economic empowerment and long-term security for these families,” Njenga said.
Migori Governor Ochilo Ayako echoed these sentiments, praising the project for its potential to drive regional growth and uplift livelihoods.
KenGen’s Gogo upgrade underscores the company’s commitment to clean energy and community development. With construction slated to begin in 2025, the project aligns with Kenya’s broader push toward renewable energy and sustainable growth.
