Dear Santa, I’m only Human and Kenyan

Date:

Dear Santa,

I’m only human.

With unlimited potential but limited resources. On a good day, I believe in the power to conquer the world and all the things I could afford and places I could visit and live in. On most days, there’s the unwavering spirit to do exceedingly hard things and move a step at a time.

I believe in humanity and dream of what a place the world would be if we were all humane but as I said, I’m only human. Limited in resources, in connections, limited in the good I believe in given who people are, limited emotionally and selfish to a number of extents.

I’m a Kenyan.

Usually overlooked, lied to, disregarded, and gaslit by the government. This year has been tremendously horrendous for us. Our fundamental rights meant nothing to anyone in power. A number of us were injured, shot at and unalived for picketing. Kidnappings are the order of the day, and every day, we wake up to new absurdities.

We spend our days infuriated, angered, and disappointed. The political class live in a bubble of their own and businesses are winding up daily. We are a frustrated nation and hope is something we used to know of.

I’m just a girl.

On any other day, I’d be telling you about the nice stuff that makes a girl’s life easy and beautiful. You know,a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, a car maybe, and an assortment of shoes and accessories. On any other timelines it would make absolute sense.

I’m however more concerned that I live in a world that does little to make me feel human. I live in a country that doesn’t take seriously all the female murders happening. When I leave the house, I’m not sure if I’ll make it back in one piece or make it at all. It’s scary to hail a cab, it’s scary to venture outdoors, it’s mortifying to be out at night.

We are untrusting of everyone around us. We can’t trust our relatives, nor can we trust friends. We are suspicious of good deeds, and our new normal is to spend our days alone.

There’s so much one can ask from Santa and I know this is outside your kind of expertise. However, being the official gift buddy you could just pick one issue that you could solve. Heading into 2025, a girl could use one less disappointment from the world.

This is just wishful thinking, but Santa please if you will, so many of us could use the one wish.

Regards,

A Christmas Enthusiast.
