Government New Move to Control Social Media

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – In a move to address the misuse of digital platforms, the government is putting up strategies to ensure all users have a safe online environment.

After a series of meetings between the Ministry of Internal Security, telecommunication operators, and social media organizations, the parties have agreed there is a need for more responsible internet use.

Although the ministry acknowledges the role of technology, especially in driving the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), technology has facilitated the spread of hateful and violent content.

The government is using the cyberspace of the National Computer and Cybercrime Coordination Committee (NC4) to develop measures that will help secure cyberspace.

The enactment of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Regulations, 2024 will also help operationalize the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act (CMCA).

In a statement, Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, noted that all stakeholders should contribute to tackling the challenges brought by technology.

“There is consensus among stakeholders I met today that further action is required to ensure a safer digital environment,” he noted.

He urged all telcos and social media platforms to moderate content and ensure all users are held accountable for their activities.

The ministry is also seeking to establish a centralized hub for reporting cyber threats and sharing information and also create a national framework for content moderation.

This move intends to prevent misuse of social media and protect users from cyber threats.

Moreover, the government will hold public sensitization campaigns to urge citizens to use the internet responsibly.

Dr. Omollo assured all stakeholders that the government is committed to creating a secure, accountable, and inclusive digital space that will promote innovation without malicious activities.
