CS William Kabogo Vows to Give KBC Facelift After Visiting Media House: “New Sheriff in Town”

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya—William Kabogo, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (MICDE), has said that the government will help Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) improve its services.

CS Kabogo was addressing the press after a tour of the media house in the company of the managing director on Monday, January 20, 2025.

“This is the first facility I want to see among many others in my ministry. One is to understand how they operate,” said CS Kabogo.

All we know about KBC

KBC is a state-run media organisation in Kenya, established in 1989 through an Act of Parliament.

It provides broadcasting services in various languages, including English, Swahili, and many local languages.

According to the CS, he was keen on looking at the challenges state corporations like KBC face.

“You realise that you are not a mayor in many places in the country now, which are issues the MD and staff have discussed with me. And I hope that as quick fruits, we must take them back on air,” added CS Kabogo.

He, however, questioned the sustainability that such companies would face in the future.

“Because we can’t continue looking for money, and after every five or six years, we return to inject more money. We have a public broadcasting division that is given public information that the government can support, and we have a commercial division that should be able to run independently,” he explained.

How the government plans to support KBC

The CS who recently took over the ministry spent two hours visiting the station headquarters.

“KBC works and looks at issues facing the corporation. I’ve gone around all departments, and I’ll ask the MD for more information so we know how to come in and help. I’m looking at efficiency and effectiveness,” said CS Kabogo.

He further disclosed that, as a ministry, they are also looking at ways of making KBC the leading broadcasting house in the country, noting that it is possible.

“For many years, KBC has had good infrastructure, so it’s about improving this infrastructure, improving the content and equipment so that they are up to date. Probably go Cloud because that is where the government is headed. I am also here to tell the management that I am the new sheriff in town if they need help,” he explained.
