Three Nairobi Police Officers Arrested for Extorting Motorists

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Three police officers from Nairobi’s Central Police Station have been arrested for allegedly extorting bribes from motorists and civilians in the city’s Central Business District (CBD).

The officers—Corporal Oscar Serem Biwott, Constable Simon Kiplagat Nyunyutik, and Constable Edwin Benedict Mubweka—were apprehended on Wednesday morning at the Globe Cinema roundabout.

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) caught them in the act, having collected Ksh.48,250 in bribes within two hours.

Following the arrests, the officers were taken to the EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre for questioning and are currently being held at Kilimani Police Station pending their arraignment.

According to an EACC source, the arrests followed multiple complaints from motorists, bodaboda riders, and the general public about officers at the roundabout demanding bribes under the pretense of enforcing traffic laws.

The anti-corruption watchdog conducted surveillance over several days and confirmed the allegations before taking action.

This crackdown comes amid an ongoing EACC audit of the National Police Service (NPS), aimed at identifying and addressing systemic weaknesses that foster corruption within the force.

The arrest of the three officers underscores growing concerns over bribery and extortion within Kenya’s security agencies, a problem that has long plagued traffic policing in urban centers.

The EACC has vowed to intensify its crackdown on rogue officers as part of broader anti-corruption reforms in law enforcement.
