“Gin Wasekao”: Tens Gather in Kondele To Follow AUC Elections

Date:

KISUMU, Kenya – Tens of Kondele residents in Kisumu have gathered under a flyover to watch the African Union Commission (AUC) elections live from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

A giant screen has been mounted, allowing locals to follow the historic moment as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga awaits the final vote.

Raila’s grueling continental campaign comes to an end today as he battles Mahmoud Ali Youssouf (Djibouti) and Richard Randriamandrato (Madagascar)

The race has enthralled the nation, with the outcome likely to have direct implications on Kenya’s 2027 presidential race.

Beyond Kisumu, a huge Kenyan delegation, including elected leaders and ordinary citizens, has traveled to Addis Ababa to support the ODM leader.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who also serves as Foreign Affairs Minister, confirmed that many Kenyans crossed the borders to stand in solidarity with Raila.

“I want to say the level of anxiety is very high. There are so many Kenyans who, out of their own pocket and their own commitment, have come to Addis Ababa,” Mudavadi told journalists.

Even as Kenyans remain hopeful, last-minute developments could shake the tight race.

On Thursday, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) instructed its 16 member states to support Madagascar’s candidate, Richard Randriamandrato.

SADC members include Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana, DRC, and others—some of whom Raila had been banking on for support.

While international relations experts have downplayed the impact, the decision could affect Raila’s chances in the closely contested vote.

With hours to go, optimism and nervous anticipation grip the country.

Will Raila make history as the first Kenyan AUC chairperson? All eyes remain on Addis Ababa.
