Ex-CS Advice To Ruto After Kenya’s Failed AUC Chair Bid: “The Real Raila Is Coming Back

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s failed bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship is stirring speculation about his next political move, with signs pointing to a potential return to frontline opposition politics.

Former ICT Minister and ex-Senate Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio has urged President William Ruto to consider creating a role for Odinga within the government, arguing that his leadership skills could still be of value.

Speaking in a TV interview on Monday, Poghisio suggested that Odinga’s political influence remains strong despite the setback, warning that his return to active politics could reignite opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Raila might play a Nusu Mkate (power-sharing) move in Addis or Kenya, but we know his character—he stands up for the weak and oppressed,” Poghisio said.

“The real Raila is coming back, and it will be hard for him to walk away or give up on this country. The only way forward is to revisit BBI and create a role for him.”

On Saturday, Odinga’s bid for the AUC chair ended in a dramatic seven-round voting process in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

While he led in the first two rounds, he ultimately lost to Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, who gained momentum and secured victory in the final rounds.

Despite the loss, Odinga dismissed any speculation that President Ruto undermined his campaign, instead praising the government’s efforts to support him.

“There will be a lot of blame games: I did not do much as expected; I am tired and too old; Ruto was not genuine in supporting me… Ruto did everything possible for this campaign,” Odinga said during a dinner event in Addis Ababa. “I walk with my head tall.”

In his remarks, President Ruto expressed disappointment at the election’s outcome, stating that Odinga was “the best candidate.”

“I regret that Africa missed an opportunity to be served by the finest of our continent,” Ruto said.
