Gachagua to Ruto: Criticism is Here to Stay, Focus on Delivering Promises

Date:

MACHAKOS, Kenya – In an address during a Sunday service at the Gospel Confirmation Centre in Machakos, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua urged President William Ruto to stop lamenting over opposition criticism and instead focus on fulfilling his campaign promises.

Gachagua, accompanied by six senators and several Members of Parliament, did not mince words as he called out the Ruto administration for what he described as a litany of failures, including abductions, extra-judicial killings, a crumbling healthcare system, and the controversial housing levy.

“Why waste time listening to what we (the opposition) are saying? When do you find time to work?” Gachagua questioned. “We speak to Kenyans about the issues that matter—abductions, killings, failed healthcare, and the burdensome taxes. Removing you from power is the first step to redeeming this country.”

The former Deputy President, who has become a vocal critic of the Ruto administration, made it clear that the opposition’s criticism would not relent.

“We will keep talking about you until we get you out of power. You need to get used to it. Relax, we’ll sort you out,” he declared.

Gachagua’s visit to Machakos marked his first return to the region in three years, following a controversial remark in which he dismissed the Ukambani region’s political influence, claiming it “can’t go far with just 1.5 million votes.”

This time, however, the former DP struck a conciliatory tone, acknowledging the region’s pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s political future.

“I have come here with one message. This thing is done. Let us stick together. Let us restore the dignity of this community by uniting as one solid block,” Gachagua said.

He emphasized the importance of unity between the Gema community and the Ukambani region, describing it as essential to unseating President Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

Opposition’s Game Plan: Building Numbers, Not Subtracting

Gachagua expressed confidence in the opposition’s growing momentum, describing their strategy as one of “addition, not subtraction.”

He highlighted the alliance between himself, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and other opposition leaders as a formidable force capable of securing victory in the next election.

“Politics is a game of numbers. Ruto’s side is engaged in politics of subtraction, while we are building numbers. Together, we will ensure victory in the first round,” Gachagua asserted.

His sentiments were echoed by local leaders, including Senators Agnes Kavindu (Machakos), Enoch Wambua (Kitui), and Daniel Maanzo (Makueni), who reiterated the region’s commitment to forming alliances with other parts of the country to secure a change in government.

“We are ready to unite our people and walk the path of liberation,” said Wambua, who also took a swipe at President Ruto. “We will continue to talk at you because the things you’ve done to Kenyans are against the constitution you swore to defend.”

Wambua further emphasized the region’s renewed identity, stating, “We are no longer the Lower Eastern region, but the Mt Kenya South region,” a symbolic gesture underscoring the growing political realignment.

Gachagua’s visit to Machakos was more than just a political rally; it was a calculated move to mend fences and build bridges.

By acknowledging the Ukambani region’s significance and retracting his earlier dismissive remarks, Gachagua signaled a broader strategy to consolidate opposition support ahead of the 2027 elections.
