NAIROBI, Kenya- In a move stirring Kenya’s political waters, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka extended an open invitation to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to join the opposition.
This unexpected gesture has sparked chatter about a potential coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kalonzo’s remarks came during a burial ceremony in Embu on Thursday, where he was joined by Azimio coalition principals Eugene Wamalwa (DAP Kenya) and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu.
The trio emphasized their commitment to keeping the opposition alive and hinted at a new political alliance taking shape.
Kalonzo highlighted the Azimio coalition’s resilience, even as some members accepted government appointments.
Addressing supporters, he said, “Whether in government or opposition, we want those who joined the government to proceed on their own. Azimio will continue operating as we prepare for a new coalition.”
Wamalwa echoed this sentiment, throwing his weight behind a possible partnership with Gachagua.
Speaking to the crowd, he said, “We heard Gachagua express interest in joining hands with Kalonzo and Wamalwa. Should we welcome him?” His call for unity drew cheers from supporters, signaling grassroots approval of the idea.
The speculation began on Wednesday when Gachagua alluded to a potential collaboration with Kalonzo. Reflecting on Kalonzo’s historical support for Mount Kenya during pivotal moments, Gachagua suggested that the region owes him a political debt.
Referencing the late President Mwai Kibaki, he said, “Kalonzo stood with us during challenging times. The 2027 elections offer an opportunity to repay that favor.” Gachagua proposed an alliance between Ukambani and Mount Kenya, dubbing it a “formidable force.”
However, he issued a challenge to Ukambani leaders, urging them to bolster their voter registration efforts to gain more bargaining power.
“You need 3.5 to 4 million votes from Ukambani to secure the presidency. In Mount Kenya, we aim for 10 million votes. Strengthen your numbers, and we’ll form the government together,” he declared.
The idea of a Ukambani-Mount Kenya partnership adds a fresh twist to Kenya’s political discourse.
While the 2027 elections remain distant, the groundwork for alliances is already being laid, and Kalonzo’s invitation to Gachagua is proof that in politics, no doors are ever fully closed.
