NAIROBI, Kenya — Standard Chartered has launched a new investment platform in Kenya, giving eligible sophisticated investors access to professionally managed global investment strategies as wealthy Kenyans increasingly seek to diversify beyond traditional savings and domestic assets.
The Standard Chartered Signature Select Variable Capital Company (VCC), approved by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), brings together specialist fund managers and different investment strategies under a single investment platform.
The bank said the platform is designed to provide clients with access to global markets, specialist investment expertise and diversified portfolios.
Standard Chartered’s VCC platform has continued to expand globally, including through partnerships with managers such as BlackRock and Allianz Global Investors.
Standard Chartered Targets Kenya’s Wealth Market
The launch comes as Kenya’s wealth-management market evolves, with affluent investors increasingly looking beyond local investment opportunities.
Ayesha Abbas, Standard Chartered’s Head of Affluent and Wealth Solutions across EMEA and UAE, said clients in Kenya were increasingly considering international diversification.
“Increasingly, for the clients here in Kenya, as much as their needs are growing and taking a different shape, they are equally thinking internationally,” Abbas said.
She said wealthy clients were no longer looking to keep all their investments in the domestic market and were increasingly considering diversification across businesses, markets and asset classes.
Kenya Has Thousands of Dollar Millionaires
Standard Chartered Managing Director and Head of Affluent Banking Paul Njoki said Kenya’s growing population of dollar millionaires was creating demand for more sophisticated wealth-management solutions.
“This country has over 6,800 million-dollar millionaires, and these are clients who have a level of sophistication in terms of how they manage their wealth,” Njoki said.
He said the needs of wealthy families increasingly extended beyond investment returns to include protecting, preserving and transferring wealth to future generations.
The bank estimates Kenya has about 7,000 US-dollar millionaires, while the wider African millionaire population is projected to grow significantly over the next decade.
Four Global Investment Strategies Available
The Signature Select platform currently offers Kenyan investors four strategies managed or supported by global investment firms.
They include:
- Enhanced Gold Income — managed with Allianz Global Investors.
- APAC Allocation Plus — with BlackRock.
- US Allocation — with T. Rowe Price.
- Global Income Plus — with Pimco.
The BlackRock-managed APAC Allocation Plus strategy provides exposure across equities, fixed income and liquid alternatives in Asia-Pacific markets. Standard Chartered said the strategy is designed to provide diversified sources of return across market cycles.
The Enhanced Gold Income strategy combines exposure to gold with an income-generating covered-call approach.
Platform Offers Open-Architecture Investment Model
Unlike a conventional single investment fund, the VCC structure allows multiple investment strategies and funds to operate within one framework.
Standard Chartered said its investment professionals select specialist managers and conduct due diligence, while appointed sub-investment managers are responsible for investment decisions and day-to-day portfolio management.
Edith Chumba, Standard Chartered’s Head of Wealth and Retail Banking for Kenya and East Africa, said the model gives clients access to specialist expertise across asset classes and markets.
“Signature Select represents a more sophisticated model of investment access for Kenya,” Chumba said.
She said the platform combines global fund managers with Standard Chartered’s asset-class specialists to create curated strategies intended to support long-term strategic asset allocation.
Standard Chartered describes the VCC as a platform rather than a single investment product, allowing the bank to add strategies from different global managers.
Platform Attracts More Than $20 Million
Four months after its launch in Kenya, the platform had accumulated more than $20 million in assets under management, according to Standard Chartered.
Njoki described the VCC as a platform designed to bring curated investment solutions to clients as global market conditions and investor needs change.
“It’s not a single product. It is a platform,” he said.
The bank said its open-architecture approach allows it to work with multiple global fund managers instead of relying on a single investment provider.
Wealth Transfer Becomes Key Concern
Beyond investment diversification, Standard Chartered said affluent Kenyan families were increasingly confronting challenges around transferring wealth to the next generation.
The bank said inadequate documentation and failure to select appropriate wealth-transfer structures can expose families to disputes and complicate the transition of assets between generations.
The concerns are particularly relevant for families with complex business interests and investments spread across different jurisdictions.
Standard Chartered said wealth preservation therefore increasingly requires planning that combines investment management with succession and wealth-transfer strategies.
Signature Select Expands Across Africa
The Kenya launch is part of Standard Chartered’s broader expansion of its wealth-management platform across Africa.
The Signature Select platform is being launched simultaneously in Kenya and Nigeria, extending a network that already covers markets including Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE and Jersey.
Abbas said the expansion was intended to connect African investors with global investment strategies and specialist expertise.
“Bringing the platform to Kenya and Nigeria is a natural extension of that network,” she said.
The platform is available in Kenya to eligible Sophisticated Investors, targeting clients seeking greater diversification and specialist investment management across international markets.
Standard Chartered established its VCC in 2024 to bring together global fund managers and the bank’s asset-class specialists and provide clients with access to custom-curated investment strategies. Its platform has since expanded through additional partnerships and sub-funds.
