Ruto: ‘This Is Not About Me or Raila—It’s About Kenya’

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- In a defining moment for Kenya’s political landscape, President William Ruto has made it clear that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is not about personal or political gains—it is about the future of the country.

“This moment is not about William Ruto or Raila Odinga. This MoU is not about sharing positions or winning elections. It is about the people and the interest of Kenya. That is what is significant.”

With these words, President Ruto set the tone for what he calls a bold and radical shift in Kenya’s governance, moving beyond the usual power struggles to tackle the real challenges affecting citizens.

-A New Political Reality: Focus on People, Not Politics-

He said the MoU, which formalizes a working relationship between the two biggest political parties in Kenya, is built on a common commitment to address pressing national issues rather than advance individual political ambitions.

Ruto emphasized that while ODM and UDA may have competing strategies, they ultimately share the same goal—fixing Kenya’s challenges.

“The expectation for fundamental progress is intense and unanimous. There is no part of Kenya that does not yearn for transformation,” the President said.

-Delivering on the NADCO Agenda-

The agreement commits both parties to the full implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) Report, focusing on:

✅ Inclusivity in governance – Ensuring fair representation for all Kenyans
✅ Protecting devolution – Strengthening county governments through increased funding
✅ Job creation & youth empowerment – Providing opportunities for young people
✅ National debt audit – Transparency in borrowing and accountability in spending
✅ Fighting corruption – Taking decisive action against public sector graft
✅ Respecting democratic freedoms – Upholding the right to peaceful assembly and protest

Ruto was particularly firm on tackling corruption and wasteful government spending, saying:

“We must rise above political differences. Jobs and wealth must be created within an environment that is fair and competitive.”

-Another Political Handshake-

Ruto also revealed that his decision to work with Raila was not sudden—he had reached out to him immediately after the elections, recognizing the need for unity and continuity in leadership.

“I told him that I want him to be treated well. I will do whatever it takes to make sure he has respect in Kenya. His contribution to this country deserves recognition.”

In a rare moment of political admiration, he praised Raila’s courage, saying: “Not many leaders can make difficult decisions. Raila Odinga can.”

With the two political giants now committing to a shared vision for Kenya, all eyes will be on whether they can move beyond rhetoric and deliver meaningful change.
