ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – The African Union Commission (AUC) has appointed seasoned diplomat and communications expert Nuur Mohamud Sheekh as the new Spokesperson for the Chairperson of the AUC, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
Sheekh takes over from Ebba Kalondo, who has completed her tenure in the role.
Announcing his appointment on social media, Sheekh expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging his predecessor’s contributions and vowing to build on her legacy.
“Deeply honoured to be appointed as the Spokesperson for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission,” he wrote on X. “I am grateful to H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf for the trust & opportunity to serve! Looking forward to working with the amazing women & men at the AUC to contribute to the mandate of our organisation at this critical time for our region.”
Sheekh brings extensive experience in international development, humanitarian advocacy, and diplomacy.
Before this role, he served as the Spokesperson for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and held key positions in various international organizations, focusing on policy advocacy, strategic communications, and crisis response.
His appointment comes at a pivotal time for the African Union as the organization navigates complex regional challenges, including security crises, political transitions, and economic integration efforts.
The AUC expects Sheekh to play a crucial role in strengthening engagement with member states, media, and international partners.
The African Union Commission commended outgoing spokesperson Ebba Kalondo for her leadership and contributions in shaping the role.
In his message, Sheekh also recognized Kalondo’s work, stating, “Her leadership has set a high benchmark, & I look forward to drawing on her invaluable wisdom & insights as I assume this important responsibility.”
