G42 and Microsoft Collaborate to Develop AI in Swahili and English, Boosting Kenya’s Digital Ecosystem

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- AI firm G42 is breaking new ground by developing an open-source large-language AI model in Swahili and English.

This initiative, aimed at supporting Kenya’s cultural and linguistic diversity, is leveraging G42’s data infrastructure in the United States.

The effort is further strengthened through collaborations with local universities and research institutes, including the Microsoft Africa Research Institute, the Microsoft AI for Good Lab, and the Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi.

Partnership with Microsoft and Kenyan Government

Peng Xiao, Group CEO of G42, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “In partnership with Microsoft, we are excited to work with the Kenyan government to usher in a transformative era for the digital ecosystem in Kenya and the region.”

East Africa Innovation Lab and Skilling Support

A significant part of this initiative is the launch of the East Africa Innovation Lab in Nairobi, operated by Microsoft and G42.

This lab will support startups, entrepreneurs, and organizations in developing and implementing cloud and AI services. It will offer design sessions, rapid prototyping, and comprehensive skilling and mentorship programs.

Additionally, the partnership aims to provide digital and AI training for government employees, cybersecurity training for over 2,000 people annually, and business skills development for young entrepreneurs.

Microsoft and G42 will work closely with the Kenyan government to establish a new East Africa cloud region. This region will form part of a “trusted data zone” that adheres to global standards for digital safety, privacy, and security.

The initiative aligns with Kenya’s “cloud-first” policy and will offer extensive cybersecurity support through Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) and Threat Analysis Center (MTAC).

This ambitious project not only aims to create a robust digital infrastructure but also to ensure that it is deeply integrated with local cultural and linguistic needs.

By developing AI models in Swahili and English, G42 and Microsoft are ensuring that technology is accessible and relevant to the Kenyan population.

Supporting Local Talent and Innovation

The East Africa Innovation Lab will play a crucial role in nurturing local talent. By offering skilling programs and mentorship, the lab aims to empower startups and entrepreneurs to leverage AI and cloud technologies effectively.

This initiative is set to catalyze innovation and economic growth, positioning Kenya as a leader in the region’s digital transformation.

The collaboration between G42, Microsoft, and the Kenyan government marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s digital journey.

By fostering a thriving digital economy through tailored AI solutions, robust cloud services, and comprehensive skilling programs, this initiative is poised to drive sustainable development and empower communities across the region.
