NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya just made a bold move in the race for artificial intelligence (AI) dominance.
The government has officially launched the Kenya National AI Strategy (2025-2030)—a five-year roadmap designed to position the country as Africa’s AI powerhouse.
The plan, unveiled at KICC by ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo, outlines a vision where AI fuels economic growth, creates new jobs, and transforms digital infrastructure while ensuring ethical safeguards against misuse.
Balancing AI Innovation and Ethical Challenges
During the launch, Kabogo emphasized the importance of adopting AI responsibly.
“The question isn’t whether we will embrace AI, but how we will shape it to keep Kenya future-ready in the global digital economy,” he stated.
The strategy underscores a dual focus: maximizing AI’s potential while addressing risks like data privacy, cybersecurity threats, and job displacement.
To ensure Kenya’s workforce is AI-ready, the government aims to integrate AI into public service by offering university graduates opportunities in the sector.
Additionally, Kabogo announced plans to introduce an AI Bill in Parliament within four months.
If approved, the bill would establish funding mechanisms and regulatory frameworks to govern AI adoption.

A Sh152 Billion Investment in AI Infrastructure
To execute the AI strategy, the government estimates it will require at least Sh152 billion by 2030.
Notably, 50pc of the budget is earmarked for developing AI-driven digital infrastructure, a critical step in positioning Kenya as a global tech leader.
Beyond government funding, Kenya is banking on public-private partnerships and international collaborations.
European Union Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger and German Deputy Ambassador Alexander Fierley both commended Kenya’s forward-thinking approach and encouraged stakeholders to actively support the initiative.
“AI is too powerful to be left to a chosen few,” Fierley remarked, underscoring the need for inclusive development.

Kenya’s AI vision extends beyond Nairobi.
These hubs aim to democratize AI, making training and resources accessible to local communities.
“This is a game-changer,” Kiarie said.
“We’re looking at a future where AI is not just for tech elites but for the everyday Kenyan.”
