Wamalwa Teases Formation of Powerful Coalition to Challenge Ruto in 2027 Election

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has signaled the formation of a strong political coalition aimed at toppling President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

Wamalwa revealed that the coalition will unite former political heavyweights, many of whom played pivotal roles in securing the late President Mwai Kibaki’s victory in 2002 under the Kenya African National Union (KANU) party.

In an interview with NTV on Monday, Wamalwa explained that the coalition would be a force to reckon with in the 2027 elections, designed to present a formidable challenge to Ruto’s administration.

“We’ve learned our lessons from the past,” Wamalwa said. “We know that Ruto will try to divide us, but we are assembling a team that will send him home in the first round.”

The coalition has already garnered support from key figures such as former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi, and Martha Karua, who were part of the influential 2002 political team.

Wamalwa expressed confidence that this resurgence of the 2002 NARC team would provide a strong foundation for a new political moment in 2027.

“We are rebuilding the NARC moment for 2027,” he added, referencing the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) that led to Kibaki’s presidency.

Other political leaders aligning themselves with the movement include Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, among others.

Wamalwa also hinted at the public’s growing dissatisfaction with the current administration, particularly over escalating taxes.

“Kenyans are suffering under heavy taxes,” he said, “and come June, they’ll face even more burdens. We want to give Kenyans hope for a better future.”

Within the Azimio coalition, the political landscape is already heating up.

Jubilee Party officials have thrown their support behind Matiang’i as the party’s preferred presidential candidate.

This endorsement positions Matiang’i as a leading contender for the presidency, sparking potential internal competition within the Azimio camp as the 2027 election approaches.

Matiang’i’s presidential ambitions have gained traction, with reports revealing his investment in a consultancy agreement with Canadian lobbying firm Dickens & Madson.

The deal, which included a down payment of $65,000, signals Matiang’i’s serious commitment to his 2027 bid.

Similarly, Martha Karua’s NARC-Kenya party has undergone a rebrand, officially transforming into the People’s Liberation Party (PLP).

The rebrand aims to resonate with a younger generation, particularly Gen Z voters, while reaffirming its commitment to democratic ideals.

The party has embraced new colors—purple, lilac, and white—symbolizing unity, love, and peace, with the purple rose serving as its new emblem.

Despite these moves, the central question remains: who will the coalition ultimately back as its flagbearer?

Wamalwa, Karua, and Matiang’i have all expressed interest in the presidency, making the decision a complex and highly anticipated one for the opposition bloc.
