NAROK, Kenya – Martin Luther King III, the eldest son of the iconic civil rights leader, and his wife Andrea Waters King have called for peace in Kenya as the nation faces protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
Speaking from the Maasai Mara, the couple emphasized the importance of nonviolent resistance, urging both protesters and security forces to adopt peaceful tactics.
“Nonviolence is not merely a tactic. It is a profound expression of moral courage,” the Kings stated, echoing the principles of Martin Luther King Jr. King III highlighted his father’s belief that nonviolence is a powerful weapon, cutting without wounding and ennobling those who wield it.
“We urge you to let your protests be a testament to your dignity and discipline,” Andrea King added.
Addressing the protesters directly, King III emphasized the global attention on Kenya, urging demonstrators and security forces alike to conduct themselves with love and respect.
“Kenyans and security forces, the world is watching,” he said.
The couple expressed deep concern over the recent violence and tragic deaths among protesters, as well as the burning of parts of the Parliament building.
Drawing parallels to his father’s achievements, King III noted that the greatest legislative strides, such as the Civil Rights Act, were accomplished through nonviolent methods.
“Martin Luther King Jr. said that in the nonviolent struggle, there is room for everyone. There is no distinction of colour, no requirement other than a steadfast commitment to justice, courage, and love,” he remarked.
The Kings urged Kenyans to rise not in anger but in a harmonious call for justice, encouraging them to demonstrate their commitment to a more just society through peaceful means.
“At the center of nonviolence stands the principle of love. Love for your country, love for your fellow citizens, and love for a future where justice prevails,” King III stated.
The couple pledged to continue advocating for love and justice, following the vision set forth by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.
“We will continue to strengthen the chorus for love and promote a more just society, envisioned by my parents,” they concluded.
