UN Adopts Chinese AI Resolution To Bridge The Digital Divide

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The United Nations General Assembly has taken a significant step towards bridging the artificial intelligence (AI) gap between rich and poor countries by adopting a Chinese resolution with US support.

This resolution calls on wealthy nations to foster a “fair, open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory business environment” for AI’s design and development.

Sponsored by China, the resolution emphasizes the need for international cooperation, advocating for knowledge sharing and technology transfer to developing countries.

The aim is to ensure that all nations, regardless of their economic status, can benefit from AI advancements.

This marks the second UN resolution on AI, following a US-sponsored resolution approved in March.

The earlier resolution, co-sponsored by 123 countries including China, focuses on protecting personal data, safeguarding human rights, and monitoring AI for potential risks.

It underscores the global commitment to making AI “safe, secure, and trustworthy” for everyone.

Collaboration Between Global Powers

China’s UN Ambassador, Fu Cong, highlighted the importance of the UN in AI governance, calling it “the most representative and most inclusive international forum.”

He expressed optimism about intensifying cooperation with the United States and other nations, acknowledging the far-reaching implications of AI in various dimensions of society.

“We do look forward to intensifying our cooperation with the United States and for that matter with all countries in the world on this issue, which … will have far-reaching implications in all dimensions,” Fu Cong stated.

Both the United States and China have shown a willingness to support each other’s non-binding resolutions, signaling a unified approach to tackling AI’s challenges and opportunities on a global scale.

This cooperation sets a precedent for future international efforts to ensure that AI development benefits all countries equitably.
