MPs Approve Oduor as Attorney General, Askul as East African Community Affairs CS

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Assembly has approved the appointments of Beatrice Askul Moe as Cabinet Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development, and Dorcas Agik Odhong Oduor as Attorney General.

This decision follows the House’s endorsement of a special motion tabled by the Committee on Appointments, chaired by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

The motion, presented on Wednesday afternoon by the Leader of the Minority Party, Junet Mohamed, highlighted the importance of women in pivotal leadership roles.

Mohamed praised the President’s nominations, emphasizing that they showcase the critical role women play in steering the country toward prosperity.

“These are exemplary leaders who have excelled in their respective fields and are well-positioned to contribute significantly to Kenya’s future,” Mohamed declared. “Their appointments also underscore the potential for women from minority and marginalized communities to assume leadership roles.”

Deputy Leader of the Majority Party, Owen Baya, seconded the motion with a call for gratitude towards Kenyans who engaged in the approval process by submitting memoranda and affidavits.

Baya underscored that this public involvement is a testament to the country’s commitment to democratic and constitutional growth.

Addressing previous criticisms of the Committee on Appointments, Baya assured that public participation had been comprehensive and transparent.

He urged Beatrice Askul Moe to excel as Kenya’s top diplomat in the East African region, serving as a crucial link between regional and national governments.

“In Beatrice Askul Moe, we have a candidate who will represent all Kenyans with integrity and dedication,” Baya stated. “I urge the House to confirm her appointment as Cabinet Secretary.”

Baya also emphasized the importance of having a reliable Attorney General, noting that Dorcas Agik Odhong Oduor is expected to provide sound legal counsel to the Head of State.
