NAIROBI, Kenya- Huawei is stepping up its commitment to nurturing Kenya’s future tech talent by sponsoring the World Skills Kenya national competition and ramping up support for student training across five specialized tracks.
The announcement, made during a high-profile event at the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET), marks a significant milestone in Huawei’s ongoing partnership with Kenya’s education sector.
The World Skills Kenya competition, an integral part of the global World Skills initiative, is led by the Director General of TVET Authority, Dr. Kipkirui Langat.
This week-long event at KSTVET has drawn a diverse crowd, including top government officials like CS for Education Hon. Julius Ogamba and PS for TVET Dr. Esther Muoria.
The event underscores Kenya’s dedication to elevating technical and vocational education on an international stage.
During the opening ceremony, CS Ogamba highlighted the transformative impact of the World Skills competition.
“Each participant will have the opportunity to learn from international best practices and gain invaluable insights to enrich their skills,” he said.
The competition is designed to push students out of their comfort zones, engaging them in practical simulations and collaborative projects that mirror real-world challenges.
Huawei’s involvement goes beyond just sponsorship. The tech giant has officially handed over a plaque to KSTVET, solidifying its role as an ICT Academy Support Centre (IASC).
This partnership ensures that KSTVET lecturers and trainers receive the necessary support from Huawei, including access to cutting-edge equipment and specialized training.
This initiative will empower the institution to deliver top-notch ICT education, preparing students for the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Building on last year’s success, where Huawei supported two training tracks—IT Networking and Cybersecurity—the company is significantly expanding its reach this year.
In the 2024 edition of the World Skills Kenya National Competition, Huawei is providing training across five tracks: IT Networking, Cybersecurity, IT Software, Information Network Cabling, and Mobile Applications Development.
This expansion reflects Huawei’s dedication to equipping students with diverse and in-demand tech skills that will drive Kenya’s digital transformation.
Dr. Edwin Tarno, CEO of KSTVET, expressed gratitude for Huawei’s continued support, noting its crucial role in enhancing Kenya’s ICT training capacity.
“It will help us expand our training [to support] the ICT sector in Kenya, including Artificial Intelligence and all the aspects that are used in technical education,” he said.
Huawei’s involvement doesn’t stop at training tracks. The company is also providing essential infrastructure, including internet connectivity for training facilities and high-tech Switches and Routers.
This holistic support ensures that participants have the resources they need to excel, both in the competition and beyond.
The World Skills Kenya competition is about building a robust foundation for Kenya’s future workforce. With partners like Huawei, the competition is not only a showcase of talent but also a platform for innovation and growth.
By investing in training and infrastructure, Huawei is playing a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of tech leaders in Kenya.
As the competition continues, the focus remains on equipping participants with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in a digital world.
