UDA Party Rejects Retrogressive Proposal to Extend Presidential Term Limits

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party has rejected calls to extend Kenya’s presidential term limits, reaffirming the party’s commitment to constitutionalism and democratic principles.

In a statement, the Secretary-General emphasized that the UDA does not support any initiative to alter the current two-term limit for presidents, as enshrined in the Constitution.

“The UDA is committed to upholding the Constitution, which reflects the will of the people, and we reject any notion of amending the presidential term limits,” the statement read.

This declaration comes in the wake of growing public speculation and debate surrounding possible constitutional amendments to prolong the tenure of the president.

The UDA, however, has distanced itself from such discussions, calling on political actors to respect the framework set by the 2010 Constitution.

The Secretary-General reiterated the party’s position on safeguarding democratic governance, stating that the introduction of term limits was a key achievement for Kenya’s political stability, ensuring peaceful transitions of power.

“The principle of term limits is not only a constitutional obligation but also a fundamental democratic safeguard. It guarantees the peaceful transfer of power, which is a cornerstone of our nation’s stability,” the statement added.

The UDA also urged leaders to focus on implementing policies that benefit Kenyans, rather than pursuing constitutional changes for personal or political gain.

The party made it clear that any attempts to revisit the presidential term limits would be met with firm resistance from the UDA, which sees such moves as a direct threat to the progress Kenya has made in entrenching democratic governance.
