Githurai Traders Finally Move into Long-Awaited Modern Market

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- After years of anticipation and a series of setbacks, over 1,000 traders at Githurai 45 Market in Ruiru, Kiambu County, have officially settled into the new Githurai Modern Market.

This Ksh400 million facility, which boasts a capacity of 1,200 stalls, marks a significant upgrade for the community, providing a dedicated and organized space for local businesses.

The Kiambu County Government, led by County Executive Member for Trade Susan Gatwiri and Chief Officer Simon Kiberenge, managed the relocation process, ensuring only verified vendors secured spaces.

The journey to occupancy wasn’t without its hurdles. Governor Kimani Wamatangi emphasized a commitment to transparency during the allocation, echoing his promise for a “free and fair process in the vetting of traders.”

Despite initial controversies and political pushback, Governor Wamatangi formed a committee in October 2023 to address grievances from traders and validate the allocation list.

This committee included representatives from the State Department of Housing, the Department of Trade, and local market officials, who worked closely to vet the vendors at Kiambu National Polytechnic in December.

The move finally allowed legitimate traders to claim their stalls and kickstart their businesses within the modern facility.

The Githurai Modern Market, officially inaugurated by President William Ruto in August 2023, is divided into seven sections: Migingo/Muiguithania, Post Bank, Kwa Nyanya, Jubilee, New Jubilee, Gateway, and Pamoja Market.

Initially completed under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, the market was meant to offer a safer alternative for traders previously operating along roadsides.

However, concerns about political interference delayed its opening, with disputes over the allocation list sparking protests among vendors.

After an incident in March 2024 where alleged goons attempted to seize spaces in the market, county officials intervened to enforce order and prevent further disruption.

While most traders have now settled into their new spaces, certain areas remain designated for future phases of development.

Yet, the market faces some lingering tensions, reportedly tied to revenue-generating spaces such as public toilets and a hotel on the fifth floor, with politicians allegedly vying for control.

Despite these challenges, the Githurai Modern Market represents a substantial improvement for the local business community, promising both security and growth opportunities for traders.

Governor Wamatangi’s administration continues to monitor the market’s progress and ensure that the facility remains a sustainable asset for Kiambu County.

With its structured setup and transparent management, the Githurai Modern Market is positioned to foster a thriving trade environment, setting a benchmark for similar projects across Kenya.
