US Ambassador Speaks After Calls For Resignation From Kenyans

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman has issued a statement reaffirming her commitment to strengthening U.S.-Kenya relations, amid recent calls from some Kenyans for her resignation.

Ambassador Whitman emphasized that, as with all U.S. envoys, she serves at the discretion of the U.S. President.

She expressed confidence in the continuity of her role following the U.S. presidential election, which saw Americans select a new leader set to take office in January.

In her statement dated November 7, Whitman highlighted the importance of the longstanding partnership between the United States and Kenya, celebrating over 60 years of diplomatic ties.

She underscored shared goals of “increased prosperity, security, and respect for democratic values,” and expressed optimism that the strong relationship between Nairobi and Washington will continue under the incoming administration.

“The American people have spoken, and a new President will be inaugurated in January,” Whitman stated, adding that her team remains dedicated to advancing the mutual interests of both nations.

Whitman’s statement comes at a time when the U.S.-Kenya relationship faces both opportunities and challenges, with a diverse range of political voices in Kenya voicing their perspectives on the ambassador’s role.

Despite the recent criticism, Whitman expressed confidence in the robust foundation of the U.S.-Kenya partnership, asserting that the alliance has only grown stronger and will remain so in the future.

Whitman has come under fire from segments of the Kenyan public and some political voices, sparking renewed calls for her recall following the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president.

Critics are pointing to her muted response to recent contentious events in Kenya, particularly in light of police actions during the June GenZ movement protests, which saw dozens killed and hundreds detained.

For months, many Kenyans have voiced concerns that Whitman is too lenient on the Ruto administration, particularly regarding reports of alleged human rights abuses.

Public frustration grew louder after Trump’s win over Vice President Kamala Harris, with several social media users urging Whitman to leave Kenya, asserting that her presence was part of Biden’s influence, which they feel has now expired.

Whitman’s future in Kenya remains uncertain, with both public opinion and political winds shifting around her diplomatic style.
